And it's time for the Game Sports Podcast is your host, David McCaig Jr. The game sports podcast is powered by 91 Network and also featured on Spaces, that is through Village Media and Sue Today. We appreciate the support.
Now, the Game Sports Podcast, I'm a little bit of a special kind of addition here and no, not the special editions that you're used to hearing on this show with having a guest, a athlete or a figure, celebrity figure come on the show as a, as a guest to join myself and perhaps someone else. It's actually the first show that we're having in the new location of the Game Sports Podcast. I have moved locations, moved homes and there is a new office set up. And if you're on the video version of 91 Network, you get to see the different background that I have going on. Simple yet effective is what I will call it, but also a little bit of familiarity as well. And if you are seeing what I'm talking about, you will understand. But if you're on audio, you're going to have to take a pause and come check it out on 91 Network. Now here on this segment, as I mentioned, the first episode that we're doing in the new office of the Game Sports Podcast, we are going to have a different approach to this show and we are going to do one segment, not split up in multiple segments. We are going to get into a lot of hockey on here with. We also plan to discuss a little bit of baseball and a little bit of basketball if time does allow to do so. But we're going to be doing it in segments through kind of a non official ticker system. Let's call that you will not see tickers on the, on the bottom here as we are not yet doing this new format, but it is going to be one segment and Jordan Trudeau is going to be joining me live while recording at a timed spot which therefore will allow us to give you the content in more brief and also summarized portions and not be as long as we usually are, but to trial a new format here on the game for your enjoyment. So please don't hesitate to give us your feedback below as we are looking exploring having some live stream content in the near future for you to be able to join on. But on this episode you're listening to a pre recorded edition of the game and the date of this recording is on May 15th and I'm currently recording at 6:52pm on May 15th, so it's before any hockey games have currently went on. So we'll make sure the contents you listen to won't be any kind of, let's say, old news by the time you tune in either this evening or tomorrow morning, or whenever you have the opportunity to make sure you like, follow and subscribe nonetheless and all the platforms of the game Sports podcast. Now in this first segment I'm going to be diving into a lot of things and pure things of NHL. When Jordan Trudeau joins, we'll get into the other content, okay? And I don't mean to call it other content because that's just as important to discuss. But at the end of the day, obviously I think a good majority of you, especially if you know me and if you follow the show, you are definitely tuning in right now because you're expecting a reaction, especially since you know based on this recording and when this was uploaded, that it occurred after Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Florida Panthers. And don't worry, I will give you that time to be able to enjoy feedback from a Maple Leaf fan, but it might not be as you expect. Okay, we got other news in the National Hockey League to talk about. And before I dive into National Hockey League playoffs, I want to dive into some news around the National Hockey League Coaching moves have occurred. This is our first episode. This is probably what I should have touched on at the beginning that we've done since April 30th. It's now the 15th. As a magistrate, we've had a couple weeks vacation and it's all due to yours truly having to move and doing all the fun joys of that. And we've had minimal uploads on our social platform. So we're sorry that we've been ghosting the last couple weeks, but now that you see us on your feed, you're like, oh, I got to make sure listen to this episode, especially the timing. But NHL playoffs we'll get to in a minute. As I mentioned, coaching moves is what I'm going to get to first. Rick Tokic to the Philadelphia Flyers. Now I did have brief mentions of that on this show. But I more so talked about this outside of the podcast and it was at a recent hockey tournament, local, locally, where we saw where we learned that Rick Talk Pocket has moved on from the Vancouver Canucks and I'm not surprised that he has joined the Philadelphia Flyers. Look, it just makes sense. And for those of you who maybe listen to different YouTube channels, different gaming type of channels and why I'm saying that's relevant to BC productions, I'll give him a little shout out. He has great franchise videos as does Tactics. Those are a couple videos I like to enjoy on my spare time. But on the 2 BC recent Philadelphia Flyers franchise video, he talked about Rick talking and trying to get him as a coach and talk about how legendary he was as a Flyer.
And when I saw Rick Talkic get fired, it made me think of that stream because I do remember Rick Tokic as a Philadelphia Flyer, but I don't, I didn't have that on my list for him just to leave Philly and jump and go there. But when I saw that video, then after I saw that video, RIT Tokic resigned a few weeks after that. I said, oh my goodness, this is a perfect lineup. Rick Tokic wanted to leave Vancouver and had his eye on that Philadelphia position. I tell you right now that's where he wanted to go. That's where he feels he wants to be be. And it is a good fit. The Philadelphia Flyers have had different moves on coaches and you know what, it's very, it's it. This one might be the one. They have some, they have some players in place, Mechkov, they have guys there that can get the job. Then they have, they have some draft picks that they're going to have to try to hit on. But this is a destination that's could be attractive to players, especially when they're playing well. But Rick Tokic has a very unique coaching style. Very he can help older veteran players, he can help younger players. Philadelphia fans, you should be excited about Rick Talk. I think he's a very, very good coach. The Vancouver Canucks Speaking of coaching moves, Adam Foot now goes over to the Vancouver Canucks. Adam Foot, Sioux Saint Marie Greyhound legend Adam Foot, may I add, but also overall NHL legend. He has a fierce nature to him and I think, you know, this is a good replacement for Rick Tokic. And this is an organization that has went through a lot this year with J.T. miller, has went through a lot with Elias Petterson and moves good moves by the Vancouver Canucks. Nick o' Sullivan, a little bit older News is going to the New York Rangers. I'm very curious to see what Dubas does in Pittsburgh. Yes, because of the Susei Marie Greyhound and the Sault Ste Marie ties but it's not like Sheldon Keith's available to take from the New Jersey Devils. So very interested to see what Kyle Dubas does in Pittsburgh. But I think get Rivel Sullivan was the wrong decision. It's not his fault the way that team performed. That team is just not where it's where it he thinks it's going to be. Because even though you have Crosby, Malcolm Carlson, these are this is not the team that is going to be a playoff team. I think you need to observe moving guys Carlson if you can move that contract Sidney Crosby look the new coach that goes there has a project sticking to the topic of coaching. Michael Solomon, Rick talking Manafort all have new homes and interest to see what the rest of the offseason brings. But I'm not thinking off season because we're still in the playoffs. Speaking of the playoffs now transitioning from coaching to the playoffs. We've had a very exciting playoffs right now and I think there's been a lot of good stories. And to be honest, as much as I picked Washington to beat Montreal that you can check out on our TikTok page that's at the Game Sports podcast where we had predictions for that the I was hoping the Montreal Canadiens would have defeated the Washington Capitals and then Montreal would have beat Carolina and then we would have had all Canadian final four Oilers, Jets, Leafs. Haps right and I'll get to the Leafs in a few moments. People are rolling their eyes there thinking oh you think they could actually get through the Panthers? Look, I'm going to save that for a moment. The Washington Capitals beat Montreal but I feel like Montreal, despite losing the games and losing that series, I think they were actually putting up a good fight in that series and I think this has been a good growth forward for Montreal. I think that experience in the playoffs is just only going to help them further. And watch out for Montreal, the Ottawa Senators. Look, if anyone thought that the Leafs should have swept the Senators, you're nuts. If you look at the standings though, the Senators were not an eighth or even seventh place team. This was a sixth place team. If I remember correctly, if you did a one to eight seating and despite being the tr you would have been a second seeding overall if you're doing one and eight. If you want to go that literal, the Ottawa Senators were a team that weren't too far away from 50 wins this season. This is a team that shouldn't have been underestimated in the Leafs winning in six despite we being me being me and Alex picking them in five look good fights. All in all it's been a good playoffs and I'm giving a little bit of extra love to the Munchucking. The Ottawa Senators exceeding expectations. Ottawa I think meeting them by making the wild card. But overall it's good to see the Canadian teams get into the Stanley cup playoffs. Now current rounds going on look Carolina as I'm recording they're just getting ready to have puck drop against the against the Washington Capitals and this and this and the jets are going to be playing the Stars tonight. This could decide this could be the jets season tonight. This could be capital season tonight. We don't know what's going to happen by tomorrow morning but nonetheless I wouldn't be surprised if both Carolina and Dallas did win. But being on the road right it's. I find that when I when I look at the games tonight and I see Carolina, Washington and I see Dallas, Winnipeg, Washington and Winnipeg got to capitalize based on the games that they have tonight and having the games at home is where they have to win. It's a whole nice advantage try to get that pressure back so they go back to play game six on the road. Connor Halabuk winning at home. I feel like he's more successful on the road but either way this is not a guy who's been successful in the playoffs. It's unfortunate for Winnipeg who is such a strong and perfectly built playoff team in my opinion. But as I sit here I think you could see two series end tonight. But let's hope not because I would like to see these series go a little bit more deeper. But Dallas is looking really impressive out of all four of those teams. Carolina putting a good surprise on Washington and we'll see if it is the last time we'll see Eskin for this season not retiring. But I mean if they're going to put a waste to such a storybook season where he's out in the second round after finishing first. So we will see what happens with that tonight. Other games obviously at Vegas and Edmonton. Edmonton eliminates Vegas in overtime yesterday. Kasperi Kapanen look Hyman happening John Klingberg Connor Brown Calvin Picker before a lot of Leafs former depth Edmonton Maple Leafs these depth scoring that the Edmonton Oilers are seeing very, very impressive that is being done there. Look people say that Edmonton how they doing this look in the playoffs they Find ways to win and good players come out. And the depth is coming out for the Oilers. And other teams have more depth than the Oilers, that being the jets, that being the Leafs, that being the Capitals. But the players that are showing up right now is the Edmonton Oilers when it matters most. A lot of these guys know what it takes to get there because they were part of this team last year when they lost to Florida at 7. And if you're a fan of hockey, you should be happy that Edmonton has moved on and seeing Connor McDavid go further. And he's made the conference finals three out of the last four years, if I recall correctly. And now he's going to try to make his second consecutive Stanley Cup Final. But it's going to be a tough road, even if it's Winnipeg or Dallas. Vegas eliminated by Edmonton. Look, Vegas not making a past second round. I have no problem with that. Look, new team, they've won the cup already. Their ltir stuff and drama from before, how they get in and figure it out and they find a way. Congratulations to Edmonton. Happy to see that elimination happen. Just being transparent with you, but Vegas, very impressive team and Edmonton beat them in five games. I thought that was a seven game series for sure. But the other three series are still active. I talked about two already. A couple surprises there. I thought Washington put a little bit more of a fight against Carolina, but Carolina winning that I think is not a surprise. Dallas beating Winnipeg, I thought despite how good Dallas was, I think I really underestimated how Dallas is in comparison to Winnipeg. I thought Dallas was good, but I didn't see how. I didn't realize, sorry. How good they truly were. That that is a very impressive hockey team they have on that ice. But we'll see what happens after tonight what the lay of the land is before we get into our next episode. Next week, as we're going to start getting into our routine segments now, I'm going to get into the topic that people want to hear, probably by me talking. And as I sit here, I know Trudes is currently waiting in the wings and I have eight minutes to myself to discuss this. And so the Toronto Maple Leafs are the Florida Panthers series. Obviously I'm going to give them a little bit more discussion on here because everyone knows that I am a Toronto Maple Leaf fan, but I always try and I have for these first 13 minutes talked about other moves in the league and talk about other teams. Okay. So don't be chirping me below about being a Toronto Maple Leaf fan and talking about the Leafs. I just, I just know that with being a Toronto Maple Leaf fan, people love to hear Maple Leaf fans vent, get mad, cry, whatever the term is that you want to hear. But let me spin in a different direction for you. This is if not the biggest fan base in the world. You don't hear it in Scotiabank arena because it's full of suits and I've talked about it on the show. It is quiet. The playoffs, you do get here a little bit more noise when they do. Well, when they lose, they boo you off the ice and throw jerseys on the ice. Look, I'm not going to get into throwing jerseys on the ice that much. But booing last night, the date of this recording, which again was Thursday, last night being Wednesday, the booing was warranted. It was warranted. Fans paid big money for that game to see the Maple Leafs get absolutely spanked in that game. And that's not a word I want to use too often on this show. But that is exactly what happened. They absolutely just got torn apart by the Panthers. No pun intended.
The there was a difference in level in that game. As a Leaf fan, I've seen a lot of games in my 33 year existence and out of the 28, 29ish years, 30 years that I can remember for watching games, that was one of the worst performances I have almost ever seen. There was no effort. It's like they didn't care. They were not prepared. And I'm not putting these losses on wall tough night last night but the guy has given them an opportunity to win. He's not getting the help outside of his crease. Matthews, Marner. I am over the excuses of Matthews being hurt, the injuries, not showing up in the playoffs. Okay and let me give you an example. As I sit here, there was a fax sent to me by Alex to make sure that I share Alex Parr here on the game sports podcast. Miko Rantman has eight goals in his last six playoff games. Mitch Marner has seven playoff goals over the course of his six year contract.
Make that of what you will. I don't not talking about points showing up when it matters most. And they Leafs. The Toronto Maple Leafs are currently down. They are down in the series 32 going back to sunrise last night, the game the fans had a right to boo. There was no effort. Florida was the better team and it's not Joseph's wall fault that they're doing. The Florida Panthers came back to make it a 3:2 series. They go back to Sunrise. That's going to be not an easy win. Okay? They weren't successful there in the first two games and this is what's going to happen. You're either going to know in the first five minutes of this game that you're going to get the Toronto Maple Leafs that you expect to get or you're going to get the Toronto Maple Leafs where you're going to be sitting on the couch like you were last night going, oh boy, we're in for one tonight. Ever since Marchant got that winner in overtime, it's like the sales were just deflated out of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Ever since that happened, they came back in that game, they went into overtime. You know that there was a different spark ever since that game. This team has not been there. They have not been existent since that moment until now. It's like the Leafs have just been deflated. And I want to make sure I touch back on the injuries. Those are excuses. If you're too injured, don't play. Put someone in the lineup that will put his body on the line and do what it takes to win. Jesper Bulquist goes in for Evan Rodriguez. Goal and assist. Yesterday was one of the hardest working guys on the Florida Panthers yesterday. Depth and the depth for Toronto. Which leads to my other point in a second. Sticking with injuries, Bergeron play with a punctured lung. I think he had a sprain ankle. I don't know he had injuries. You find ways to win and when you wear that C on your jersey, I don't care how your wrist is and your body is, you find a way to win. And if you can't do that, don't go on the ice and hurt your team because you're hurting your team more. Going to talking about the point of when I talk about Jesper Bulquest for a second, there is a guy that comes in off the lineup and just does a good job that makes his efforts known, right? And I've already forgot about that one point that I want to jump into. My apologies. But diving into BoQuest for a second, that's what's on my mind. This is somebody, okay, that got his chance in the lineup. And when I see that with Nick Robertson, it's the same example, guys. A healthy scratch, he comes in the lineup and scores goals. That is what the character is. He makes you not want to take it out of the lineup and that's what the effort needs to be. The interviews with the players yesterday, lackluster. The only good interview was Chris Tanev and he's the Last guy that should be holding accountability. The last guy. The Toronto Maple Leafs are in a bind. They're up 2 0. They were up 2 0. And the Panthers have been brought back over six days ago. All the Leaf fans were excited. They were saying they're going to the next round. This is our year and you can still believe that. But you're going to know what team you're getting in the first five minutes of that game. That game being on Friday, which is tomorrow, the date of this recording being Thursday. And I have not seen given at any current time. I have not seen any updates. I'm trying to keep an eye on updates that Stolars will be playing on a wall, but really I don't care. It's not Wall's fault. The team that has been battling all year won the division. That's the team that I want to see as a Toronto Maple Leaf fan show up and play with heart. You deserved to get booed off that ice yesterday and have a jersey throw him. I don't like. I don't say that too often, but the effort was awful for a team to be in the second round booed off their ice for a fan base that's been killing just to make have a breath in the second round. That was not a boo because of losing the game. That was a boo because of the horrendous effort done by that team. And what I'm expecting is this was my point. Now that I remember and I, I will lead to maybe the sign off before CHS comes in if that loss doesn't put a fire under your ass for that game on Friday. You really got to check yourself as a hockey player. I don't care whatever level I played, junior hockey level, as people know I've talked about on the show and chirped about. I knew that after I had a bad game or, or if we got blown out that I expected the boys to come back and battle. And that's what I expect to see when I'm sitting on my couch tomorrow where I am watching a different location to try to change the juju. Yes, I'm one of those individuals again, this team, the main points. The fans deserve to boo the jerseys. Say whatever you must. They had no heart, no will. They haven't played the same way since that overtime loss. Florida has been the better team, but the series is still not over. You can go in there, take the wind out of Florida sales, come back to Toronto and revive and have this fan base behind you for a Game 7 against the Florida Panthers don't fold up. Don't, don't, don't fold up Shop. Don't get. Don't get it all packed up. Go out and show hearts. Show the fans that you care. Because last game you obviously didn't. The first two games you did the first two periods, first period ever of that game three. You did find that that's been the mantra. The Florida Panthers, they're playing Florida Panther hockey right now. That is a team that won the Stanley cup last year. That is who you expect to see on that ice. And despite how people think Florida is better than Toronto, they are playing like it. But Toronto can win this series. This is any one series or two really good hockey teams. And the Toronto made police are now behind the eight ball when Florida was. And good teams find ways to win. And the guys that I'm looking at are Matthews, Marner, Lelander. I am looking at these guys to step up and play and show heart. Especially number 16 and especially number 34. Show heart. Don't make stupid plays and play the way you can. That's a host slash fan half for you. Florida Panthers though, Look, you're playing good. Bobrovski, you gave him confidence. Gets a shutout, only lets one goal in two games. The defense are scoring at will. Point shots, look, Toronto score goals, screen Bobrovsky get traffic shots from the point all day. That is when you are going to score against Sergey Bobrovsky. Just telling you. I'm not going to give you a prediction. Do I think there'll be seven games? Not going to tell you. But I'll tell you from a fan perspective, I hope there is. But I can tell you one thing. Whoever wins this series between Florida and Toronto, that is who is going to the Stanley cup finals. No offense to Washington or Carolina. Maybe you expected different from me today. You're not getting it. Perfect timing as I just wrapped up my segment and continuing to go. I just finished my last point. Trudes, this timing and chemistry we have is impeccable. We're still. I told everyone here that we're recording that we're trying a different segment, that we're trying a different. It's that you're jumping on and we're trying to evolve to a different kind of format with the show, with. With segments and how we want to do it. So Trudes, thank you for joining us my friend. You actually joined at the most perfect time. That is mint. How you doing?
[00:21:12] Speaker B: I'm great, how are you? So I am like right into it here. Awesome.
[00:21:16] Speaker A: Right into right into it.
[00:21:17] Speaker B: No, this is awesome.
[00:21:18] Speaker A: Here's the thing. I just vent and I didn't vent. Oh boy. Talked about the Toronto Maple Leafs, but I kept it in clean perspective. And I'm not going to get into it, but I, I would like your points about that game last night, not re sharing mine. What did you see from a team that obviously didn't show up? What did you see last night as a, as a hockey fan from the Toronto Maple Leafs?
[00:21:39] Speaker B: I see board battles. I see board battles lost. And that's been the story in my opinion in the last two. Last two games is Florida's really, really letting their size and their physicality like go and flourish. And I don't. I don't see the Leafs matching it as of right now. I mean, in Florida, you knew it was going to be tough in Florida either way. And like you want to say like, oh, they should have won that one in overtime is like, well, yeah, but like it hurts even more to get shut out and then, you know, only get one goal again. But I see a lot of, like, I see a lot of board play and a lot of battles lost along the boards because. And that's just leading to Florida chances like offensive chances, odd man rushes. And I don't really think Joseph Wall, I like, I don't think we blame him at all. Like, he done his job. He did his job in Florida last night. He got hung out to dry. But I mean this like, you just gotta adjust. I think you gotta try and find a way to get pucks to the middle and then generate like, generate shots through to the middle of the ice and have traffic in front of Boski because nothing's beaten him right now either.
[00:22:49] Speaker A: Nothing. Well, that's been hockey chat for me as I promised with Trudes. We're going to be talking on the major junior scene more so. And then I'm going to.
I'm gonna bring two topics to Trudes that he wasn't really prepared for. It was baseball and a little bit of basketball, but not where you think Trude's draft lottery. Basketball is what I want to get into. Yeah. Yeah. Major junior update gonna go to you to take the floor you can centralize at current playoffs. I know that obviously the London Knights currently everything going with Oshawa Easton Cowan Leaf prospect who had a very crappy world juniors but looking really good in the playoffs for the London Knights. We have the major junior hockey scene Trudes updates that you can provide to us there on from a OHL front overall and the Sue Graham Front.
[00:23:29] Speaker B: Yeah. So right there, the. It's. It's an Oshawa London final, as we really predicted on this show. And I think that a lot of people were expecting that. To be honest. I don't think that there was any other storyline there that that made sense.
And London's currently up on that one. Three, three to one.
Oshawa handed them their first loss of the. Of the playoffs there in game one in London, which was pretty impressive. Andrew Gibson, former Greyhound, getting two goals in that one. But like, London's depth is showing and they're. They have played really well the last three games. Game three was. It was a doozy. It was. So it was actually like five. One point and then it. And then it ended to seven. Five. Sure came back in the last, like in last period to make it interesting there. But that game's going on right now. Game four, sorry, game five there is going on right now and it's 00 in the first.
[00:24:35] Speaker A: We can see an OHL champion tonight. We can see.
[00:24:37] Speaker B: Yeah, they may steal one more, but I think it's. It's gonna be London and the Memorial cup is probably gonna be London hosting the Memorial cup at the end. So, I mean, like, that's kind of going as expected in the. Like, if we're looking ahead in the whl. It looks like Medicine Hat and Spokane is the final. So Medicine is. Yeah. Gavin McKenna, which would be kind of interesting, like, if that come. Like if they make it to the Memorial cup and London makes it to the Memorial Cup. Well, medicine, that's up 3:1 on Spokane right now. But like, it kind of reminds me of 2005 when that London team went up against Crosby, ended up beating Crosby. So it's gonna be a matter of like Ken McKenna.
Well, the. Barring they win, could McKenna be able to square off against the London Knights? And then looks. It's looking like Moncton out of the qmjhl. They're playing Ramouski and that one they're playing.
[00:25:44] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:25:44] Speaker B: Sonny Crosby again. And they're up three nothing in that series. So.
[00:25:48] Speaker A: Yeah. So we're likely going to see. Perhaps. This is a bold prediction, but London and Moncton will be there. I've taught my. I can't.
Yeah. Yeah. So, like, it's. So I think that London's too powerful. And Easton Cowan, that move he made, you know which one I'm talking about. I don't even need to say it. Everyone knows if you watched a highlight real in the last 48 hours, what's been invading that. That and no, he wasn't figure skating out there. Maybe he did some when he was little to get that talent, but he. That was impressive, you know, and you sit here and you can say as a, as a Leaf fan, where was that in the world? Junior? You can say that's typical Leaf fan miss right there. So the NHL though, it's a different path. Like I would be. I think Easton Cowan can be a very unique talent and score a lot of goals, but I think he. I think his feistiness makes him a very unique prospect. If he can do that type of moves and he won't, the NHL is going to be a whole different game. But if he can bring that offensive game to the NHL with having that feistiness, that will be impressive. That is what you need to do. That's what. How could Chuck plays. And no, he's not Matt Tkachuk. Maca. Chuck's also Baker and built there from the saying, look at Kachuk, look at Marchant. Speaking of two Panthers, Sam Bennett, another Panther. Right? So like there's those guys make a living for being pests but can score goals. That's the type of game that I think Easton Cowan will be most successful in the National Hockey League when he does make it. And if you're, if you're a Leaf management, you're not trading that guy unless you're bringing in a trade next year for somebody who is a top three forward. Okay. That's. That's a prospect that you need to. Don't get rid of prospects. So I think there should be something a little bit of light for prospects at the end of tunnel for Toronto.
London's too powerful. Truths too powerful.
[00:27:36] Speaker B: Yeah. And like we talked about that all year and they, they returned most of the same squad as they did last year, which was the Memorial cup finalist and an OHL champ. So yeah, it's. It's gonna take a lot for somebody to beat them. So just. I don't know, I can't remember what we said, but Memorial cup actually is in. Ramouski and Moncton are both qualified for the Memorial cup now.
[00:27:58] Speaker A: So I was in the queue, but I forgot where it was.
[00:28:01] Speaker B: So, yeah, it's gonna be Moncton, Ramouski and probably Medicine and London. So that's good.
[00:28:06] Speaker A: You can watch Gavin like you said, Gavin McKenna.
That's great. Like, I. You want to see the best prospects on the big stage. That. That's important.
[00:28:13] Speaker B: Right?
[00:28:13] Speaker A: But next. Now what this is obviously, and I would have touched on this at the end, this is part of Our Chuk a Buck segment and, you know, new format that we're looking at won't change anything with that. But Sue Gray ons front is what we talk about a little bit here. And I'll give a little dash for the hounds here for two things. Brady Martin having an impressive showing on the international stage, but also the recent draft with the. Or the draft, the development camp that you recently went to. We haven't had a show since then because yours truly has moved. As you can see, I'm into my new house. I don't have. It's a new background. Ish. I brought back the Gretzky corner. That used to be a thing on the show, but I kept a couple familiar things. This might have to come down soon on my left. But if you're looking at whatever you're looking at, but you were at. I want you to take the floor about those two items before we transition to basketball and baseball, which people are going to like, what are you doing? Brady Martin. Go first with Brady Martin.
[00:29:04] Speaker B: Brady Martin kind of solidified what all Greyhounds fans have been saying about him all year.
And he's moved up the draft rankings quite a bit.
And it's looking like, well, Craig Button had him at I think six the other day. I watched TSN when they were doing a little segment on the NHL draft after the lottery.
So he has him as early as six, which. And that's Philadelphia taking him there. So I mean, I think it's pretty much set in stone now that at the end of the day he's not making it past Pittsburgh. Like, there's no way it's Jubas is.
[00:29:42] Speaker A: Going to draft him.
[00:29:43] Speaker B: It's just a matter of time. Like, is he going to be taken before that? And when you read Twitter, like, a lot of people very impressed with him. Like at the double at the U18 championship, he had two goals in that gold medal game. I know Canada walk, mop the floor with everybody. But like just his, his ability, his. His combination of skill and physicality is really what is very attractive, it looks like, to NHL scouts. And like he, he. He lays. He body checks better than almost better than anybody right now in senior hockey. Probably one like the best, one of the best, if not the best. I saw a stat as well. Connor Henderson sent it to me. His point per game average went like, he went up in the second half of the year. So he was averaging like, I think it was like 20%.
It was a metric that had his point per game measured like against like the two halves of the seasons. So like from September to December, then from January to March, his point per game metric went up. So as he's trending up and I think that's like, that's kind of huge as well. Like you can see his development and his growth both happening in quite a few areas of his game. So yeah, he, he impressed a lot of people. And yeah, he's, he's most likely going to be a top 10 now, which is crazy because I think he started the year in the mid-20s range for 25th, 26th overall around there and now he is gonna go top 10. So he moved up 20 spots there. And the development camp, you know what a very, very positive thing out of the development camp was. We saw pretty much all of the draft picks from the last two drafts at this development camp. So there was a lot of skill, there's a lot of like fast paced, it was fast hockey like that, no loss. Ryan Kaczynski, the two first round picks, they look ready to take on the OHL next year. They both have full hounds gear which is, which is a good sign.
And then a lot of names, a lot of names were impressive. It's going to be a competitive training camp in August, I think. Think it's going to be very competitive. A lot of young players like looking possibly to take some spots and they, there is the talent there. So it's, it's going to be interesting to see who they want to surround. Hayes Martin, their current 07 core. Chase Reed.
[00:32:06] Speaker A: Yeah, Chase Reed.
[00:32:07] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:32:09] Speaker A: Big fan.
[00:32:09] Speaker B: So it's going to be, it's going to be interesting to see like what the evolution of the roster is going to look like in the offseason. Like are they going to, what kind of trades, what kind of moves are they going to make to like get the team ready for August? Another big thing too is the CHL is now allowing three imports on a roster.
[00:32:28] Speaker A: So that's good news. Good point.
[00:32:31] Speaker B: David Hollub looks like he was drafted to the ushl, so he may be on his way out of the organization, which will open up a spot. I don't know that for sure, but that just, I mean we'll, we'll see if he takes his career elsewhere, but that might open up an import spot. So there's, there's three, two or three players still to be drafted by the, by the Greyhounds upcoming. So like the way the roster looks right now might look a lot different come August and it's like, it's, it's looking good right now and you add some, you add some scoring depth with some import picks, you got yourself back as a contending team again. Obviously, Brady Martin's going to be. He's going to be a force in the league, so.
[00:33:12] Speaker A: Oh yeah, he is. It makes it interesting for next year, especially if we're. And when he goes this year and, and Ohl Memorial Cup. Ohl. The Memorial Cuphead, sorry. Makes it very interesting what the Hounds will do next year. But you had a player that you brought up before we go to our we. We segued to near the last couple topics of the show. You had another player that you were keeping an eye on at camp and I didn't. I don't want to pull up my phone to look through. You play with Chase Reed. We talked about it at Jaren Stag.
[00:33:38] Speaker B: Calum Cross gre.
[00:33:39] Speaker A: That's right.
[00:33:40] Speaker B: Calum Cross GRE played Chicago Steel last year. He is like a pretty highly touted prospect and the Greyhounds kind of took a flyer on him in last year's draft when they drafted him the second round after Ryder Cali. He ended up coming to development camp. He's very polished. He made some really nice plays. I say if he commits, he's probably looking at a top four spot. Like he looks. He looks like he can come and take that that reign there. And he wasn't like it was just a development camp.
So yeah, if you're looking for him like Chase Reed is very noticeable. Dare I say not flashy but. But you notice him all the time. He's jumping up on the rush, he's making plays with the puck. Cross Curry was more quiet but definitely he got some points. He scored a goal, got a couple assists. Very quiet but just really, really solid defensively. Made some nice plays. So hopefully we get to see more.
[00:34:38] Speaker A: Of that Chase Reed getting that jersey this year. Quiz and fun fact for you Trudes. I want to bring this to the screen for a second so I I typed this out. You probably know this fact but I want to say it and we like to give a little bit of extra love here for Susei Marie because with the game sports podcast from I know we do have a good a big base of listeners from the Toronto area wonder why the the GTA area and also Sue Michigan again wonder why given history which is all it's still close. That's I can throw I can go to the river and throw a ball in the water and almost not I wouldn't say I can hit the other side of the border. I'm not that Good at throwing a ball. TR can tell you that. But you understand what I'm picking up, what I'm putting down. Do you know when the first greyhound team was formed? I have interesting. 19.
[00:35:22] Speaker B: Yeah. Ninth. I know this.
[00:35:25] Speaker A: I know some people.
[00:35:27] Speaker B: It wasn't the ohl. It was.
Yeah, it was a different.
Was it a U18 type of team or was it just a junior C, junior A.
[00:35:37] Speaker A: So. So 19. 1919. And it was in the Upper Peninsula League.
[00:35:42] Speaker B: 1914.
Yeah. So I was close.
[00:35:45] Speaker A: You were. And they played. There was. Now it's not a thing but the Upper Peninsula League. And the coach was George McNamara. He suggested the team be called the Greyhounds. And I verified this on Wikipedia. But I looked at another source.
[00:35:57] Speaker B: This was in the book. It was in the Houndtown book.
[00:36:00] Speaker A: Yeah, it was in the Howtown book. Look, a greyhound is much. He said he suggested the team be called the Greyhounds since a greyhound is much faster than a wolf. That reference was all to the already established club and that. I've taken that quote from Wikipedia if you want to know where from. But that's also reference to the book to the Sudbury Wolves. So that's the early years of the team. Officially the team was founded 1962. Okay. That's where if you want to talk OHL and the June major junior hockey scene. But 1919. So a coup couple seasons after the Upper Peninsula League they went over to the noha, the senior A division where they won A championship at 21, 23, 24 and 25. They also won the Allen cup and the list goes on. 29. They went to the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League, the Noge. I'm a former Nodes player. Love seeing that a little bit. I love seeing when that league they. They won the league championship four consecutive years. 1928 to 1931 at a fifth title. 1942, a little bit of 11 year drought there. Junior hockey came to ab end in 1945 because of a Gulen street arena that was destroyed by a fire here in Sault Ste. Marie history. That I didn't know. Okay. And there's more. It was revived. The Hounds were revived in 1948. They played out of Sioux Michigan at the still built arena called Polar Stadium. If you're in Sioux Michigan, Sioux Ontario, you know what I'm talking about. The Polar Stadium. If you're from outside of Michigan, look this. Are you from outside Sault Ste. Marie or in Michigan, wherever you are, states or Canada. Polar Stadium, legendary. The original hockey town is what they call two Sami Michigan where the Detroit Red Wings used to have their camp out of Polar Stadium. Then there was a lot more wins. And then when they won, they were found in 62. The founders. There's a list of them. Obviously a list of them. Angelo Bambaco, Lloyd Procop, Phil Srirachi, Pat Esposito, Bill Kelly. And look, they never had a losing season in the first 10 seasons in the NOJHL. That's the modern era. Look, this list can go on. It's worth a read. I think the history of the Sioux Greyhounds as I spent three minutes there and only wanted to spend one. You can dive into that history. It is rich. It is so cool. It is so cool. So cool.
[00:38:15] Speaker B: Well, and I remember reading. It's been a while since I read the book, the Houndtown book. And I know there's a second one that I have to get my hands on and read, but. Yeah, my, my two numbers were. Because. Because when you asked the question, I was thinking in my head, okay, well, they were established before. I think it was like in 1914. And then 1962 was my second number. Was that the Right. You said that right.
[00:38:33] Speaker A: Yeah, correct.
[00:38:35] Speaker B: When they were established as a junior establishment association. Yeah. So like, it is funny, you hear. You hear a lot of people say, like, Sault Ste. Marie is such a great hockey town, great community. And it's just a small town on the border right next to the like, like on the border of Michigan.
[00:38:51] Speaker A: Michigan. Yep.
[00:38:53] Speaker B: In the middle of nowhere. Nothing really around it. But yeah, the. The reputation is there, the history is rich and like, I wonder where this community would be without. Without the team itself. Like, it would probably look a lot different.
[00:39:05] Speaker A: So very different. Very different.
[00:39:07] Speaker B: Yeah. I think this team will be here for a long time. The fan support is. Is great.
[00:39:13] Speaker A: Now the last thing they'll say, speaking of between Canada and the States, before we get into the. The to. To the. The baseball thing that I want to bring up in basketball. Say chance getting chanted at a Florida game. Look, I'm not gonna dive into this. I'm gonna save this for next week. Maybe when I have. If I. Maybe I'm in a worse or better mood. I don't know yet. But you and. I'm sorry. Truce. I gotta say it once. You all crazy. Okay? You are not. That never happens. That. That never happens. That's great.
[00:39:44] Speaker B: It just cut you out. It was like. Okay, hold on, hold on.
[00:39:49] Speaker A: Is what they're saying.
[00:39:52] Speaker B: Like, it's not a Canada U.S. it's. It's. There's like Auston Matthews is American.
Sam Bennett, Brad Marchand are Canadian. So, like, it doesn't really make a lot of sense.
[00:40:03] Speaker A: It doesn't make sense. And half of the Florida Panthers, there's a good chunk of Canadians. And they have a Swedish, their best defenseman, Swedish, their goalies, Russian, their best forwards. Finish.
Look, Barkov's better than could Chuck. Sorry. I take Barkov 10 out of 10 times. And I'm sorry about video. I. I knocked out my webcam, so now it's on my computer. Webcam. Okay. That's how passionate I got about banging the computer. That actually probably be a good clip if I can remember to do it that way. So USA Chance. Dallas Star fans are doing it too. They have some states guys on there. But again, you have Canadians, you have Russians. I don't have this. I had the stats that's. They were in front of me. They're not here. But let me tell you, it's more Canadians than you have Americans. I'm telling you that right now. So enough with the USA chant. If that's. If that is something to go against Canada, between Canada and the States, because you're playing a Canadian team. A we beat you in the four Nations. Bite me. Number two, the world juniors. Whatever. Whatever. We won the four Nations. I would take that trade off all day. And look on the Olympic level, I'm liking our chances. I'm sorry. I know USA looking good, but Canada looking just as good. It's going to be a good rivalry. I get it. But you don't see Canadian fans going, canada, Canada. No, because we know that half our team is what? And half our team is this. And there's a mix. Yeah. We used to boo your anthem because of something else not related to hockey. Like, it's wild. I don't want to get into politicals.
[00:41:32] Speaker B: But yeah, even that. Like, it's. It's not about. That's not what hockey's about.
[00:41:37] Speaker A: Right?
[00:41:37] Speaker B: Like, that's.
[00:41:38] Speaker A: No, don't be chatting. Usa because if you chan usa, you don't know what the hell you're talking about. And as soon as I swear, of course, my webcam goes to my computer. One. Which is the worst quality one. Okay. It pays me back for it. But Trude's baseball. I'm gonna save this for Connor and I. But I want your brief point, because when Connor and I talk about, we'll get into more deep. It'll be a good teaser for the next show. Pete Rose now getting some recognition for the. For the hall of Fame. I said this as A clip and you can scroll down on our tick tock to find it. I said I hope they don't put him in for a little bit because that's the one thing this man wanted before he died. Okay, but the MLB is going to put him into the hall of Fame next time unanimously. I guarantee you he'll be in the next hall of Fame. He will be there. He'll be the one put in. What is your thoughts on that Pete Rose situation? I want to hear your thoughts. And then me and Connor will do a bigger dive on it next week.
[00:42:29] Speaker B: I don't know, like, it seems like, it seems like a, I mean a long time coming to be able to be like a, like a top even a topic of conversation.
I mean I don't know if it, if it makes it easier that he's passed on or not now. Like is it better to, to honor him? I don't know. I mean I don't know if I'm, if I'm the right person to have an opinion on it. But like I guess when you, what it boils down to is you look at what he did when he played and was he and all he's an.
[00:43:02] Speaker A: All time leader in hits, 4200 hits, something like that.
[00:43:07] Speaker B: Yeah. Like so was he a legend in the game of baseball? Yes. So I mean does his decisions like anybody, do your decisions off the field impact your, your decisions on the field or in your place of sport? I mean it should, yeah, it should. So but I mean from baseball standpoint, of course, 100.
He deserves the recognition. It's just. Is he, does he deserve it? I guess would be the question.
[00:43:33] Speaker A: Steroid usage? No. Pete Rhodes. Because he freaking gambled. Yes.
[00:43:39] Speaker B: So yeah, right. Like that's not, that's something that you and I think maybe now it's like there's more strict policies and laws on it. You know, like when you're going to be a professional athlete, like you saw like they get in trouble. Like Shane Pinto. I don't even like he had a gambling suspension.
[00:43:59] Speaker A: 80 games.
[00:44:01] Speaker B: There's 50 games PD suspensions. But I mean everybody takes something like these athletes, they, they take supplements, they really treat themselves with care. But I mean, hey, he could hit.
[00:44:13] Speaker A: Get the guy in the hall of Fame.
Get the guy in the hall of Fame.
[00:44:18] Speaker B: We'll see, we'll see, we'll see what happens.
[00:44:20] Speaker A: Last topic as we follow down, a list of topics to touch on on the show. Plus Mavericks looking real nice on that pick. Looking like a genius. So your thoughts go on that. Go on. That I. You must have a little opinion on it.
[00:44:33] Speaker B: Well, I. I don't see. And this is. I had a conversation at work with. With my boss the other day about this. I don't. Haven't really followed basketball in a couple years, but from my understanding. Okay, there was a trade. The Doncic trade.
[00:44:47] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:44:48] Speaker B: Was traded to the Lakers. To the Lakers, Yeah.
[00:44:52] Speaker A: Anthony Davis and some other part of the package back.
[00:44:55] Speaker B: But the mavericks had a 1.8 chance of getting the first overall pick, which is basically nothing.
[00:45:02] Speaker A: And the Islanders also had that, too, and they won the lottery.
[00:45:05] Speaker B: Islanders, yeah.
[00:45:07] Speaker A: So, I mean, rigged. That's. I, look, I'm gonna say I don't think it's rigged.
[00:45:12] Speaker B: Why would the island. Like, why would they give it. I feel like it would be rigged if it was the Blackhawks that got it, I think.
[00:45:18] Speaker A: Look, speaking of the mba, you know, I don't. I don't think the Mavericks were rigged, but either. It's no way it was rigged. There's no way.
[00:45:25] Speaker B: It's just one huge coincidence, I guess. I guess you could say that. That. But like, what a. What a chance. What a chance.
[00:45:34] Speaker A: You take that. And I look, I didn't want to dive into this too much, but I'm gonna say, look, as a Raptors fan, I would have loved to see Cooper flag. But as the Raptors won some games at the end, I'm like, oh, there's hurting your chances. But here are the mavericks with a 1.8 chance going. Doesn't matter where you finish. And that's the beauty of the draft lottery. And the NHL showed their draft lottery on tv. They did it a little bit different. Now, I don't think you can change anything in that machine. No. People are going to be skeptical.
Right. But I don't. I don't think there is as much as people want to be point fingers at Bettman for being a Florida, Vegas, Utah, whatever fan, you know, sure. You see that he gives a lot of. He's looking at trying to go back to Atlanta. Okay. And he also has interest in going to Arizona. You're crazy, Batman. That's not happening. But here on this topic, I'm talking NBA. So on the Mavericks front, that's luck. We didn't see the draft lottery. I do think the NBA should put a draft lottery feature in place where you see how they win and the rules and how that is. I think that needs to.
[00:46:28] Speaker B: Well, they didn't televise it. It. They just came out and said, boy, yeah, that's a.
[00:46:32] Speaker A: Now If I'm incorrect about that finding, I didn't watch it. But from what I understand, you don't see how that system goes. You just see the picks as they go. You don't see the system. Yes, I think seeing the system. Exactly. You need to see the system so the Mavericks now can have a court of Kyrie Irving when he's back from injury. Don't forget everyone, he is injured. Anthony Davis, Cooper Flag. Okay, Cooper Flag is sick. Is he LeBron James come out of high school? No. But we've also seen some number one picks become stud. They're not or duds. Look, you can look at Anthony Bennett from Canadian big one to the Cavaliers. Andrew Wiggins. Has he been what he was all hyped to be despite having whatever any type of spurts that he's had in his career? No. Giannis attended a kumpo. One of the best players in the league looking like to get traded was a mid round first round pick. The Raptors wanted to trade up to get him, but the Bucks said no. Fun fact of the day, the NBA draft doesn't matter. It's not like like in a hockey. It doesn't matter either. Look at Alexander Dagg, anything can happen. But Cooper Flag looks like a special talent as being a Duke fan I saw him play this year and he didn't criticize from the shots that he took in his that last game. But no, he doesn't come down to that moment. It's sad that sometimes it comes down to the last moment. I think Cooper Flag had such an impressive year overall. The Mavericks winning this expedites anything that fans had a doubt for, right? And Kyrie's hurt. If you want to bring in a point guard, guess what, you're now going to bring in a point guard. You want a premier guy, you're going to get them because shooting guard Kyrie will move over whatever the heck happens. Mavericks winning this lottery is a luxury for that franchise. And you know what happened? Los Angeles, no playoff success this year. They get eliminated early. People are thinking the Mavericks won this trade. Look, they didn't get the first round pick from there, right? Like yes, they lost games because they lost Doncic. So now the GM's looking like a genius. But. But do you think he sat there and spun a crystal ball and went okay, if I trade Luca, I'm going to only win 50% of my games. It's going to cause me to get the 1.8 chance I'm going to win the lottery this year. Unless Adam Silver sat in there and went, we're going to give you the pick. That didn't happen. So the Mavericks look like geniuses, but overall, I don't think it was rigged. You hope it wasn't rigged, but it is a very high coincidence, a very strange coincidence, 100%, especially on a fan base where they gave threat death threats to the. To the. To for the trade that they were wanting not to come to games that they were. Now you get Cooper Flag. Everyone's like, well, I'm a fan again, so I'm sorry about all I said. Right. I wanted to get that fact on this show and I wanted to loop you in from a. More from a different perspective, from someone who maybe isn't a Duke fan. I don't know if you're a Duke fan or. Yeah. So it's good to get your opinion on that. So let us know if you think below. The NBA draft was ready. Thought I'd bring that up on here.
Trudeau. This has been the new kind of layout. I kind of like the login, log out, jump in. Gives it that live feel. I want listeners to let us know how they feel below. And don't hesitate to trip me about my camera flaw that I just caused myself. It was my fault, not my camera. Me banging my table caused my webcam to disconnect because I was hitting it too hard. New desk, by the way. I'm working it in. I'm trying to make sure it's got good quality for my upset.
[00:49:41] Speaker B: Well, you have reason to be upset. Like, it's okay.
[00:49:45] Speaker A: Wonder. I wonder why.
I wonder why this. This team. This team. 33 years. I remember 30 years of training. I can't. I cannot.
[00:49:55] Speaker B: It's still doable. That's the kind of. The crazy thing too, though, is like, yeah, like wall. They're done. And it's like, well, they're not. Like, they're not done, but it looking good. Sure feels that way. Of course.
[00:50:07] Speaker A: Yeah. And I hope the players don't feel that way because you'll know, as I said. And I'm going to end the show the way that I started it or not started. I talked about it midway through my first segment, so that's a lie. But you'll know the first five minutes. Yeah, the hockey game.
[00:50:20] Speaker B: You'll know whether or not you can watch the rest. Yes, that's true. I second that.
[00:50:24] Speaker A: Trude's my friend. This has been fun. It's been good. Good to be back. We had a couple weeks off, you know, me moving and all that fun. Stuff. You're moving soon too.
[00:50:33] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:50:33] Speaker A: Yeah. There you go. Congratulations.
There we go. There's. They're gonna have a new area.
I have a. I found a Greyhound jersey. Two of them. Oh, two of them.
[00:50:43] Speaker B: What?
[00:50:43] Speaker A: Yeah.
Like are they white one and red one? The circle. It's.
[00:50:48] Speaker B: It's nice.
[00:50:49] Speaker A: I want black stars. The black matte one. I want them.
[00:50:53] Speaker B: Yeah, that's nice.
Very nice.
Well, they'll continue with it next year, but it's just a. It's a really nice jersey.
[00:51:01] Speaker A: It's not even just. It's sexy. So sex black.
[00:51:05] Speaker B: And the red with no white is like really cool.
[00:51:08] Speaker A: Yeah, really cool. Bring it. Keep it going. And Jerry Lynscombe, if you're listening, dive into that. But either way, Truth, I want to say thank you, my friend, for joining me here tonight and talking. Well, major junior, but also baseball. Basketball. Yeah, we went in that direction.
[00:51:21] Speaker B: Yeah. Thanks for. Thanks for having me. It's good to be back. I know we. We probably won't be as regular in Chuck a Puck over the next couple months, but that'll only make it more exciting come August and September, especially with.
[00:51:36] Speaker A: Trying out different things and seeing how that goes.
[00:51:40] Speaker B: Looking forward. Coming up. Yeah. Oh, Jays.
[00:51:43] Speaker A: I don't have my Vlad jersey because I'm trying to be optimistic over here. But the Vlad jersey is at the ready. It's at the ready. I'm looking at it to be put in replacement of this pretty soon.
[00:51:52] Speaker B: Bo. Now let's sign both. Let's sign him.
[00:51:55] Speaker A: I think he gets traded. So I'll leave it. I hope not too. I'll leave it. I'll leave it there. I'll leave it there. Truth. Thank you again and I want to say thank you to everyone for joining.
